Miami’s new rap agenda:
Hip Hop for youth and by youth
The Brass King The Rare Grooves Selector presents the
PATH to Life Mixtape Vol. 1

19 November 2011, Miami, Florida — The Brass King The Rare Grooves Selector proudly presents “You Choose: The PATH Mixtape, Vol. 1.” Free downloads are available online at www.pathtohiphop.org. The album includes projects and collaborations orchestrated by PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hip Hop, Inc., Miami’s premier Hip Hop education organization. The album is a rare celebration of Hiphop, appropriate for all ages, genders and cultures.

Mixed and narrated by one of Miami’s most versatile pioneer DJ’s, The Brass King, original tracks are combined with Hip Hop History lessons laced with the DJ’s signature music production style. The mixtape features the legendary KRS-ONE, Miami Hiphop activist and pioneer Brimstone127, songwriter and edutainer Sekajipo Genes (Liberia, W. Africa), the multi talented Laguardia (Miami), Empress of Hiphop Soulflower and the title track, “PATH to Life” by Sista Whirlwind. Guest appearances include Final Second, P.O.W. (Power Of Words), John Wilson, Souljourner, Mozel & Shannon Daniels, Kristine Alicia, FYAH, Monetique, Will Da Real One (RIP), and original work from the PATH Hiphoppas (youth ages 13-18 from Miami, FL) and PATH ProdiGeeZ (youth ages 7-12 from Antigua, West Indies). President Obama also shares his respect for and concerns about rap music: “Hip Hop should not just be a mirror of what is, it should also be a reflection of what can be.”

“You Choose: The PATH Mixtape, Vol. 1” introduces some of Miami’s best talent who are challenging the negative stereotypes often associated with rap music. They are brining upbeat rhymes, a variety of musical styles and content that will uplift, inspire, encourage and educate listeners. The tracks address topics like homelessness (Hard Times by Sekjipo Genes), lung disease (Jennifa Heart by Brimstone127), gun control (Gunslinga by Brimstone127), economics (Economy Count by Laguardia), world history and culture. In addition, the album pays tribute to the pioneers by highlighting the 4 main artistic elements of Hip Hop culture. The album release was held Saturday, November 19 at Catalyst Hip Hop (301 Westward Dr. Miami Springs, FL 33166). It included an open mic hosted by Young J and Yoli Mayor followed by a presentation of the full album with live performances of select tracks.
