Pronounced (Slew Slog)

The slough slog is a wet hike that transports the group into the mysterious cypress habitat. This memorable experience combines group exploration with a first-hand look at the ecology of this unique environment.

At Hidden Lake, the slough slog takes place near the Pa-hay-okee Trail on the first day and requires group transportation for the afternoon. At Loop Road, the slough slog takes place 1⁄2 mile from camp on the second afternoon, so participants walk to the location.

Depending on the time of year, the water level varies from thigh-high water to ankle deep mud. Walking sticks, dip nets, and ID cards are provided for hands-on investigations. During the slog, chaperones are responsible for keeping their tent groups together.

After the slough slog, groups are given time to hose off shoes and change into dry clothes. Adults must supervise the cleanup and changing. Clothes can be hung from the clothesline with provided clothespins, but must not be hung from the tents or put in the garbage. Care should be taken to try to keep the restrooms and tents relatively clean.

Shark Valley Tram Tour (Loop Road)

The Shark Valley tram tour is offered
only at Loop Road. The tram tour is offered on the first day and requires transportation for the whole day. If a group does not go to Shark Valley, the block of time will be filled with other ranger-led activities. Shark Valley offers a great chance to see wildlife along the 15-mile tram road. A highlight of the two-hour tour is the observation tower, a 50-foot high platform with an expansive view.

IT'S ABOUT TO GO DOWN!

The following applies to PATH Retreats only.

What is PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hiphop?
PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hip Hop is a non-profit organization that uses Hiphop culture and education to advance scholarship (academic achievement), service learning, leadership and entrepreneurship.

What is a retreat?
A retreat is time for personal and group reflection outside of one’s usual environment (physical space or otherwise). PATH Retreats are designed to disconnect from technology (there is no cell service or wifi available) and city life to engage fully with the natural environment, PATH Fam members, and be creative in a new environment.  This retreat will focus on exploring the outdoors, self-reflection, and script writing for PATH’s 2024 production.

Do I have to participate for the whole week?
If you choose to participate in the Everglades experience, we ask that you be fully present from the trip option you’ve selected. If you have scheduling conflicts, please contact Natty @ 786-837-1583 immediately to discuss.

Everyone is welcome and strongly encouraged to be available for the Friday debrief (December 29) but if you can’t make it, no problem. It isn’t mandatory.

What accommodations are available?
There is no shower on site but there is running water. Tents, grill, covered hut, camp fire, bathrooms, water station (with hose only), refrigeration (for medical purposes), emergency phone, and emergency shelter are available at the camp site.

How much does the experience cost?
The cost for participation is $25.00 for all attendees. This covers part of the cost of all activities and food. The rest of the experience is funded by PATH, Inc., The Everglades, and our generous donors. Please take this into consideration as you plan for participation. Once you commit, please follow through unless there is an emergency that you could not anticipate. If you do need to cancel, please contact Natty @ 786-837-1583 immediately.

What’s the age group?
This experience is intended for the intergenerational members of the PATH Artist-In-Residence cohort. Teens ages 14 – 17 are welcome but should be accompanied by their parent/guardian.

Can I bring friends?
All participants MUST be invited and pre-registered. If you have friends that want to join, please have them contact us at 786-837-1583 immediately.

What should I wear?
Dress in casual, comfortable attire for movement, planned activities, and the weather. The experience is mostly outdoors, so bring a long sleeved shirt for protection from the sun and mosquitos and shoes that can get wet and dirty. Additional items can be found in the “WHAT TO PACK” section.

Will food be served?
Yes. We will enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner together. Please bring your own lunch on Wednesday, December 27. We will provide water and every other meal (no pork or shell fish products). If you have dietary restrictions, you may consider bringing your own prepared food (that can be heated up on the grill). Limited refrigeration space is available.

Do you provide transportation to and from the program?
Transportation will not be needed once we arrive at the campsite. We will carpool to and from the Everglades.

Who do I contact in case of an emergency?
In case of an emergency or unexpected absence, please contact:

Natty @ 786-837-1583

Kayla @ 786-704-4206
